Isaan Dancehall
CAMA is delighted to announce that Maft Sai of the excellent Bangkok based Zudrangma Records will be bringing the sound of the worldwide dancehall to ATK for one night only.
After returning to Bangkok from his residencies around London, Maft Sai set up Zudrangma Records, a vehicle by which to show off his love for traditional Thai sounds Molam and Luk Thung. His Paradise Bangkok live shows showcased, for the first time in a Bangkok club setting, the vintage sounds of Luk Thung and Molam alongside live shows from national artists such as Waipod Petchsupan. The nights immediately attracted a young, hip audience, as vintage Thai Funk was played alongside music from Jamaica, West Africa, Asia and beyond, to create a truly unique mix that is Maft Sai’s signature sound.
The Zudrangma repertoire has since expanded to include a new concept: Isaan Dancehall, where tough basslines and heavy percussion from Kingston to Khorat represent the sounds of the world wide dancehall, designed to move any crowd around the globe.
As well as being the only place in Bangkok to hear these sounds, Maft Sai has taken his shows further afield to Japan, England, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, always with the same results: people simply love the music, and are thrilled to experience this lesser known aspect of Thai culture.
In addition to the crowd response, local and international press alike have been quick to pick up on the Zudrangma boys’ unique musical approach, and the events have received coverage online and in several print publications around the world. It’s not just that they recognise a good party when they see one – the promotion and attention given to Asian culture and music is always picked up on as a key component of Zudrangma’s identity.
If you’re into roots music from Jamaica to West Africa to South East Asia, don’t miss Maft Sai’s debut Vietnam show at ATK.
