VN Tribes’ mix of beats and live melodic vocals have made them quite simply one of the most exciting live acts on the Hanoi circuit. Influenced by the sounds that surround them in Vietnam, the duo incorporate Dan ca, Hat Ru, Vong Co, Cai Luong, Nhac Tai Tu, Quan Ho, Ca Tru and even the atonal drones of funeral music with dance floor grade beats.

Long time Hanoi residents, DJ Y and vocalist Pat met through a mutual love of music and the traditions of Vietnam. It wasn’t long before they started sampling all the myriad sounds that attracted them from their adopted homeland whether from people, traditional instruments, ethnic communities or any other sounds that the duo found to be anachronistic. Live, they blend them with the Techno sounds that they grew up with.

Pat: “I am trying to achieve a Vietnamese influenced harmonious new sound. With VN tribes, I feel myself as an experimental architect trying to build a new kind of house. I see the tracks DJ Y plays as the groove and foundation and my part as the melody and interior design. To a certain degree, when both match, we create harmony and we’ve got our hit.”
