Simon Whetham (Sunday 24 June)

The Onion Cellar continue to provide high class events for Hanoians this time helping to organise minimalist UK composer Simon Whetham’s only Hanoi performance at ATK.

Simon Whetham captures and composes almost primarily with field recordings taken from around the globe from Peckham Library to the steppes of Mongolia to the fjords of Iceland.

Since beginning to record and compose in 2005 Simon has been busy. He has played at Cafe Oto, a haven of experimental music in the UK’s capital; has collaborated with some of the biggest names in his field such as Colin Potter, Philip Jeck, Mark Fell, and Scanner; has exhibited a sound art piece in Iceland; recorded in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil with the Mamori Sound Project; performed at Experimental Intermedia in New York and Madeiradig 2010; had work released by labels such as Monotype and Unfathomless; and been invited to participate in two residencies at the Art Container in Tallinn, Estonia

Events and projects in 2011 included a live performance at the Moers Festival, Germany; a further collaboration with Hugo Olim at the Observatori Festival in Valencia, Spain; and running field recording workshops at both the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and the Madeiradig 2011 festival.

Throughout 2012 Simon is traveling the globe, participating in residencies, performing, recording and collaborating with other musicians and artists in each country he visits, and continuing to run Active Crossover as a residency and performance project. His trip to Australia saw him support the “Godfather of Japanese Noise”, Merzbow.

Hanoi is lucky enough to have Simon stop over for one night only where he will perform at ATK. Minimalist performances like this aren’t for everyone – there definitely won’t be any dancing – but for those with open ears and minds, this isn’t one to miss.

Support comes from French ‘audio tourist’ Sebastien Gesell. Sebastien will play an introductory set from 8pm of obscure, dark, climatic sounds set to a very slow beat. After Simon Whetham’s 30 minute set, Sebastien will take the stage again with a fresh synthy set of shoegaze to close the night with a breath of optimism.
